An Evening in Downtown LA

My newest timelapse video, An Evening in Downtown LA, is a short homage to my home – downtown Los Angeles.

With the exception of the opening and closing scenes, all timelapses were shot on 11/10 and 11/11/11. Areas featured include: Little Tokyo, Historic Core, DTLA Art Walk, and the Financial District, as well as a beautiful day to night scene captured from my roof in late September.

The idea for this video came to me during the DTLA Art Walk on November 10, and was partially influenced by the 11.11.11 One Day on Earth project. My goal was to capture a piece of life on an average evening in downtown LA. Granted, Art Walk is no average evening, but it’s a regular monthly occurrence, and always breathes a lot of life into the neighborhood. The DTLA Art Walk drivelapse was captured on 11/10, and all other scenes were captured on 11/11.

This is by no means a comprehensive piece – there is so much more to this neighborhood than what is shown here, but I hope to have provided a small glimpse into life in this rapidly growing and evolving neighborhood, one of the most unique in the city.

This is really awesome! Did you take photos or video for the time lapse?

    Hi Chris,

REALLY nice work! Can you tell a bit more, how much time between shots, shutterspeed etc?

    Thanks! Joris, Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Thanks Joris! The day to night scene had a 6 second interval and was shot in AV mode. The drivelapse had a 1 second interval (1fps) and was shot at 1/20s, f/5.0. All remaining shots had intervals between 1 and 4 seconds.

Beautifully shot – totally crisp images. I’m wondering how you got the camera moves, were they done in post or did you use a slider and motor unit?

      Hi Brian,

Sorry.. I overlooked your comment until now. These moves were all done in post. No slider or dolly used.
